What is Osteopathy?

How can Osteopathy help?

Osteopaths are highly trained healthcare professionals, specialising in musculoskeletal conditions. As an Osteopath, we can assess, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate these conditions. The musculoskeletal system consists of bones, muscles, joints, and ligaments; osteopaths not only look at this system but also look at how it is interacting with the nervous and circulatory system within the body.

To practice, Osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council and complete over 1,200 clinical hours as part of their four-year Master’s degree. As a regulated profession, they are committed to ongoing professional development through CPD courses and must comply with the regulations and guidelines outlined in the Osteopathic Standards. This ensures patients receive safe, effective, and evidence-based care.

Osteopathy provides a holistic approach to health care, we look not only at where the pain is, but also where the problem is, as often where the pain is, isn’t where the problem is! We also factor in lifestyle, general wellbeing, mental health, and past/current medical history into our diagnosis - this allows us to treat patients individually, and also ensure safe practice.

Your safety is our concern which is why we go through a detailed case history and medical history at your first appointment. This ensures that we are aware of any previous medical history that may be relevant and we can also screen you for any other health conditions that may require you to seek additional medical advice.

The aim of treatment is to aid the body’s natural ability to heal and to restore balance. This is done through numerous techniques such as, soft tissue massage, myofascial release, stretching and relaxing of muscles, joint mobilisation and manipulation, rehabilitation, etc. Treatment is patient specific, we are all different meaning our bodies respond differently to various approaches. Our job as an osteopath is to find out what approach works best for you!
